Blog Post #4 EDCI 335: Learning Activity Design

The learning activity that my group chose to do was an introduction to volleyball. By starting with the basics, it helps students be able to build the fundamental skills to eventually be able to participate in full gameplay. Essentially it involves the students getting divided into teams of 6 and catching and passing the ball to their teammates and then throwing it back over the net to simulate real gameplay. Once students feel confident they can begin actual gameplay by bumping and setting.

This learning activity aims to promote physical activity, team spirit, and knowledge of the game of volleyball.

Reflection:

After finishing the Learning Design Proposal, the presentation, and the final Learning Design Paper, I would say that my group had success working together. There were times that we found it a little challenging to understand what needed to be done but once we figured it out, dividing the work up wasn’t a challenge. I always find it interesting to work in groups in an online class because it definitely takes a tone of patience and communication skills but in the end, I really liked working with this group for this class.

Blog Post #3 EDCI 335: Best-Structured Learning Experience

One of my best-structured learning experiences is Anatomy and Physiology 12. I found this class to be incredibly beneficial because it was mainly hands-on learning with a lot of labs. Getting to conduct these experiments in person using real biological material was such a cool experience.

What made it memorable and worth writing about?

Two things that were the most memorable about this class were getting to dissect a sheep’s heart and a pig fetus. It felt like we were getting to see everything that we learned in textbooks in real life. In the end, I took so much away from this class and it was definitely one of my favourites throughout my high school career.

Post #2 EDCI 335: Face-to-face vs online learning environments

What is only possible when face-to-face?

  • Hands-on learning in the classroom: Things like labs, experiments, and hands-on work usually need to be done in a class environment with the supervision of a teacher or professor.
  • Interacting with teachers/students in-person: For many, physically being with other people in person is super important to get the most out of their learning experience.

What is only possible when online?

  • Remote learning: Through online lectures or online classwork, you can learn from anywhere in the world!
  • Connecting with people worldwide: You can do group projects over zoom etc to collaborate with people all over the world.

What are the shared elements from both a face-to-face and online learning experience that create meaningful learning?

A shared element from both face-to-face and online learning experiences that create meaningful learning is technology. Multimedia makes learning more rich and more accessible for everyone. There are so many platforms that can be used in both online and face-to-face classrooms. Some examples include, Khan Academy, google classroom, and Canva. These three platforms serve different purposes but all have a shared goal of learning, creating, and posting through an online platform. Furthermore, we are seeing an increase in the use of technology in classrooms like labtops, ipads, smartboards, and more. It is this technology that allows students to further their knowledge both in a physical and digital classroom. An example from my personal learning experience is using powerpoint to create presentations to present face-to-face, and also using powerpoint to present in an online class. Another form of multimedia that creates meaningful learning.

Blog Post #5 EDCI 338: Why Media Literacy Matters in your PLN

Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space:

Benefits:

– Increased visibility for your platform/message/cause

– Building a community of people with similar values and/or collaborators

– Gaining feedback/giving feedback and creating a dialogue with others

Risks:

– Privacy breaches- risks of stranger danger or people with bad intentions getting a hold of your information based on your engagement on a public platform

– Negative toll on your mental health from criticism and harassment.

– Negative effects on your personal reputation if community guidelines are breached and/or the public agrees something you have said or done is unethical or wrong

– Misinformation being spread online without facts to back it up

What are the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official)?

– Security threats

– Damage to reputation

– Negativity online : personal and professional criticism

How to address negative replies and critiques that reflect your personal values and employer’s social media policy?

First, it is important to stay calm and not blurt out a quick response to the negativity, this can just make the situation worse. Second, it is important to maintain professionalism and acknowledge the critics perspective, making them feel validated. If the critique involves your employer, perhaps it is important to communicate with your employer to let them know the situation, they might not want you to get involved at all. Furthermore, in some cases it is a good idea to deal with criticism in private, for example, if it is a negative comment, perhaps message the person privately to communicate with them. Lastly, it is important to separate online and reality, letting this criticism get to you can have a negative impact on your mental health and in reality, there will always be someone who disagrees with you.

What is the benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy?

The benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy is that you can effectively navigate and contribute to social media. It means you will understand the guidelines and ethics of having an online presence. It means you will have the tools to navigate misinformation. It means you will have the skills to create and build your own platform using different forms of multimedia. It also means knowing when to ask permission to use certain material in your PLN.

Blog Post #4 EDCI 338: Personal Learning Networks in Practice

Incorporating inclusion in a professional setting, for example in an office setting:

  • Diverse Hiring: This is super important as the only way for a work place to be truly inclusive is if there is a diversity of people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and ages.
  • Diverse Promotions: It is essential to make sure that promotions are not going to a certain “type” of person. Often we see white men at the top of the food chain in large companies, so making sure that the promotion process is inclusive is very important.
  • Taking Feedback: This is another thing that can help create a more inclusive environment by listening to what the employees are saying would improve their work experience. Making sure to here everyones voice.
  • Educational Sessions: Everyone has unconscious biases and prejudices. Conducting educational sessions to give employees the opportunity to reflect on these biases can help with making the work place a more inclusive space by opening peoples minds.

Reflect on how social media can play a role in helping you establish messaging and themes that are inclusive and diverse:

Social media can play a role in helping you establish messaging and themes that are inclusive and diverse by allowing collaboration between individuals from diverse backgrounds, being able to share diverse and inclusive content, and learning from other individuals’ content.

By finding other accounts that you want to interact with, you can connect with these accounts via messaging and repost other’s thoughts that you resonate with.

How would you create a PLN prior to engaging in a social media campaign on a topic of your choice?:

  • Collaborate: Find people with a similar interest and professionals in the same field.
  • Create a goal: Establish your goals and objectives ahead of time in order to have something to work towards and can be specific with who you choose to collaborate with.
  • Use multiple social media platforms: By using multiple platforms you can reach more people to collaborate with and also extend your audience for you campaign.

Blog Post #3 EDCI 338: Visitor & Resident Map

What digital platforms are students currently using to develop their professional network?

Currently, students are using platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and even TikTok to develop their professional network. Even though a couple of these platforms are usually used for personal accounts, many are using them to start new businesses and connect with others to network.

What could the student consider in expanding their professional learning network?

When trying to expand ones professional learning network, it is important to utilize these platforms and join social groups, follow relevant content, and make friends in similar fields. Also posting things that are relevant to their professional interests could help their account gain attention and find people with similar interests.

How does data privacy and security limit and/or promote a PLN?

Data privacy and security limits PLN’s because often there are breaches in peoples privacy online and this can cause a lack of trust when it comes to networking online. Sometimes people are afraid to connect with others online due to the fear of their information being leaked or people who are cat-fishing (people who claim to be someone they are not). This makes it harder to connect with individuals with similar interests when there is a constant fear of the other person’s real intentions.

In your network how can you create a digital identity/ reputation?

Everything that you post, comment, like, and follow all becomes a part of your digital identity. Depending on the reputation an individual would like to carry with them, they might consider posting and sharing things related to who they are trying to portray on the internet.

Consider how an employer would respond if you applied for a job with them and they assessed your social media presence via your digital identity:

I believe my digital identity reflects who I am and my values pretty well. I don’t have anything on my social media that I wouldn’t want an employer to see.

Blog Post #1 EDCI 335: Learning Activity Design

For my Learning Activity Design Assignment, I chose to do an infographic on the game “match to make 11”. This is a card game that I have observed while being a student teacher in a grade 1/2 class. It is an easy, fun game for students to play in their free time or as a math lesson to work on their addition skills. All it involves a partner and a deck of cards.

Reflection:

Since I am a second-year student at UVIC and I have little experience planning lessons, I wasn’t sure at first what to do my learning activity on. I chose to do this simple activity that I observed to practice step-by-step instructions on a fun poster (I’m not entirely sure why it turned out blurry I apologize). Seeing the EDCI 565 learners’ learning activities was really neat. I could sort of compare and contrast with my own design.

Blog Post #2 EDCI 338: Personal Learning Networks and Digital Identity

What is a digital identity?

A digital identity is your presence online. Where and who you interact with is a part of your identity online. What you post, comment, and share, can generally always be tracked back to you, even in the case of private accounts. Things like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts are platforms where you can post pictures and comments and if your name is associated with the account, it is pretty easy to track it back to the owner of the posts. This creates a sort of “identity” that follows you online and throughout life.

How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?

Posting personally can effect your professional career as you carry a digital footprint with you through life if you choose to have an online presence. Sometimes inappropriate content or words are shared online and they can directly affect your career as they could go against company beliefs or guidelines. Many employers do background checks which include looking through social platforms before hiring employees. This would affect your social media use because perhaps someone would chose to post appropriate content only and maybe use private accounts if they are aware of how it could affect their career.

How do digital identities converge in networked publics – what are the impacts and/or benefits?

Since there are so many different types of online platforms, digital identities converge in networked publics by developing different personas across different platforms. For example, I use my facebook to connect with people in various clubs I have been in throughout the years, therefore my facebook has very little personal information or images of me as it is simply being used as a means of communication. I use Instagram as a space to post more personal photos throughout life, therefore more of an identity can be created on this platform. Additionally, I use Youtube with the sole purpose of posting content for school which is also a private account. However, once someone starts following and interacting with multiple platforms of mine (especially since a lot of them are connected in multiple ways), my personal identity quickly moves throughout my networked publics.

Group reflection on digital identity:

Many people in my group added that they did not find much when searching their names on the web. One of my group members mentioned that their LinkedIn popped up, and I noticed that my facebook account popped up. Also some of my old race times for track and field popped up, but other than that my social media use is relatively private and controlled. It is, however, interesting how easy it is to be able to find anyone of various platforms as the majority of people are on some form of social media. Even though privacy is relatively easy to accomplish by being able to monitor who can follow you, it is still very easy to learn quite a bit of information about where people live and their full names as well as what school they go to simply by seeing their profile online.

Blog Post #1 EDCI 338: Personal Learning Networks and Digital Identity

What does it mean to network using social media?

Networking using social media is a way to find people with similar interests or thoughts through different social media platforms. For example, a company can use a social media platform like Instagram to promote their products, find companies with similar products, and connect with others for things like collabs.

How are we motivated to participate in networked publics?

There are many motivations to participate in networked publics. Some of these include the fun of networking with new people, the learning that happens when connecting with people about new ideas or topics, and the financial gain that individuals and companies get from promoting businesses and products. There are many platforms for networked publics. Some of which include Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and Linkedin. One of my group members mentioned GitHub being a good networking platform and said “it serves as a platform for sharing source codes”. Personally, when I have ran clubs in the past, I found facebook to be an excellent platform to use to connect to older generations, and Instagram an excellent platform to use to connect to younger generations.

What are the risks & rewards of public communications?

Risks:

  • misinformation
  • cyberbullying
  • privacy breaches
  • inappropriate content

Rewards:

  • making friends
  • building business connections
  • educational purposes
  • fast way to reach big audiences
  • staying up to date with new information and advances in different fields

Module 5- Advanced Multimedia Tools

Experimenting with ChatGPT 3.5:

Reflection:

I decided to experiment with both ChatGPT and Perplexity having never used Open AI before. I asked ChatGPT to write a story about kids learning long division, then asked Perplexity 3 different techniques to doing long division. What amazed me right off the bat was how quick both of these platforms were to respond. It gave me an in-depth answer in a matter of seconds. Open AI truly unlocks so many possibilities and opportunities when it comes to learning. After using this tool for the first time, I can say I will definitely be using it more in the future to help me with other tasks.

What ethical concerns do you have (or not have) about the use of some of these tools?

The immediate ethical concern that comes to mind when talking about Generative Artificial Intelligence is the breaching of academic integrity. Universities are currently going through obstacles to try and find ways to screen for the unauthorized use of AI in assignments and tests. Many students are getting away with submitting assignments that were created entirely using a platform like ChatGPT. This

Another concern is the fact that Artificial Intelligence could very easily take over so many types of jobs. An example of this is generative AI creating any kind of art in a matter of seconds. Now that this technology is so advanced, is there any room for artists to still thrive?

Where do you think these tools will be in their evolution in 2-3 years’ time?

In 2-3 years’ time, I believe that generative AI will essentially take over the internet. First of all, many people are already using Generative AI to better understand certain topics, so seeing it being one of the first things to answer your question on the internet would not surprise me. What I mean by this is when you search on Google, it will generally give you a one to two-sentence response, or it will provide links that you can explore to dive deeper into a topic. If Generative AI (like ChatGPT) were to be the first thing that comes up when you make a Google search, it would summarize all of these links in a short answer. A problem with this is the unreliability with some Generative AI tools. Though they are generally reliable, fact checking these tools is a good idea.
